Description of Program: The Department of Dance provides professional conservatory dance training in New York City. It offers a BFA in Dance. The BFA is completed in three years and two summers.

The department emphasizes technical training in ballet and a range of contemporary techniques, performing, and individual choreographic work. The curriculum includes daily ballet and contemporary technique classes as well as pointe, big jumps and turns, and partnering classes; yoga; dance composition; dance history and criticism; dance and technology courses taught by Cari Ann Shim Sham; anatomy/movement sciences; dance science taught by Elizabeth Coker; music theory and history; acting; improvisation and performance workshops; all in addition to a wide range of academics and on-site physical therapy with Andrea Zujko. Special courses in the program include a yearly interdepartmental collaboration, the Choreographers, Composers, and Designers Workshop, and Dance & Technology. Class placement is based on technical level.

Degree-seeking majors currently include 120 undergraduates. The department includes full-time faculty members: Seán Curran, Elizabeth Coker, Giada Ferrone, Richard Move, Jeremy Nelson, Pamela Pietro, Cari Ann Shim Sham, and Andy Teirstein. Guest artists join faculty members each year.

Five fully equipped studios and one theater service the department, with 14 concert series per year and approximately 40 evenings of performances. An audition is required of all applicants. Auditions are held in New York City, Chicago, Miami, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. Tisch Department of Dance offers two three-week summer dance-residency sessions, featuring professional contemporary dance companies in residence. Tisch Dance also offers a four-week, college-credit-bearing, high school Summer Dance Intensive run by Indah Mariana.
