Description of Program: The mission of the Dance Center of Columbia College Chicago is to develop critically conscious dance artists who are prepared to advance the field of dance through a multitude of career pathways and serve as agents of change in their communities. Our pluralistic curriculum focuses on Afro-Diaspora and European-derived forms and situates embodied training in conversation with theory, creative process, pedagogy, technology, and dance science applications. The Dance Center connects students, the college, and the community to a diverse array of cutting-edge contemporary artists, choreography, and dance making practices through the Dance Presenting Series (DPS). DPS supports our academic curriculum in the ongoing interrogation of privileging one form over another while blurring delineations and examining intersections. The diverse cultures and experiences of students, faculty, and staff are honored in the co-creation of knowledge, valuing the many ways of being in and expressing through the body. This serves as a primary means of self-discovery, understanding of others, and advancing an anti-racist, equitable, and just society. Columbia College Chicago offers two degrees in dance: the bachelor of arts (BA) and the bachelor of fine arts (BFA). The BFA is a rigorous program intended for students with professional aspirations in dance. The BA provides a foundation in dance, with many of the same technique requirements, while allowing students flexibility to minor in another subject or double major. Both BA and BFA students have many opportunities to audition for performances. As a Dance major, you’ll bring your unique background into the classroom and collaborate with other students and faculty members to create new work, hone your creative vision, and explore the scholarly conversations at the core of dance. You’ll graduate with the skills and knowledge you’ll need to contribute to the evolving field of dance—and succeed in many other related fields. There are also three exciting Minor options housed in the Dance Department—these are the Dance Minor, the interdisciplinary Hip-Hop Studies Minor, and the interdisciplinary Arts in Health Minor.
